Dr. Michael Murphy is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts at Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick. He holds a BMus (NUI), PhD (NUI), Grad Dip Ed (DCU), and MSc IT in Education (TCD). His research focuses on music history, Irish cultural studies, and the intersection of music with political and social identity, particularly in British-Irish contexts. Recent scholarly activities include presenting at the Stanford Society’s 2024 symposium on national anthems and the Society for Musicology in Ireland’s 2024 conference on Irish Freemasonry and British national anthems. He has also contributed to the American Conference of Irish Studies and serves as a peer-reviewer for Boydell & Brewer.
Dr. Murphy’s work engages with topics like the cultural significance of national anthems, British-Irish relations through music history, and 19th-century musical expressions of identity. Upcoming engagements include a talk on MIC’s Culture Night 2024 about Ireland’s national anthems and a contribution to the Wexford Festival Opera’s 2024 programme book on Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.
