Paula Halperin

Paula Halperin is an Associate Professor at Purchase College, affiliated with the School of Film and Media Studies and the Department of Cinema and Television Studies. She also holds appointments in the History and Latin American Studies programs, with additional contributions to Global Black Studies.

Education:

• PhD, University of Maryland

Research Focus: Her scholarship explores the intersection of visual culture and nationalism in Brazil and Argentina during the politically unstable period of 1960–1980, particularly under dictatorships. She investigates how media like soap operas and dance reflected modernization dreams in authoritarian contexts.

Scientific Awards:

• National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend (2019) for her project on nationalism and media in Brazil.
