Dr. Paula Barata is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. Her research focuses on feminist approaches to understanding and addressing gender-based violence, particularly violence against women. She leads the SSAGE Lab, which investigates topics like sexual assault resistance education, intimate partner violence, and housing instability among survivors. Dr. Barata holds a PhD (2004) and MA (1999) in Applied Social Psychology from the University of Windsor, and a BA (Honours) in Psychology from the University of British Columbia (1994).
Her work emphasizes applied, community-engaged research with projects such as SSHIP (examining housing instability for violence survivors) and IDEA3 (adapting sexual assault resistance programs for online delivery). She has published extensively on topics including sexual coercion, resilience among survivors, and the intersection of normative heterosexuality with violence. Recent studies highlight reductions in intimate partner violence through resistance education and the lived experiences of economic abuse.
Dr. Barata supervises graduate students and has collaborated on projects addressing LGBTQ2S survivors' needs, pandemic impacts on IPV, and men’s normalization of violence. Her lab employs mixed-methods approaches, including digital storytelling to amplify survivor narratives. She is actively involved in policy advocacy and knowledge mobilization to inform interventions against gender-based violence.
