Paula Alonso is an Associate Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University, specializing in 19th and 20th-century Latin American political and cultural history. A full-time faculty member, she holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University (1992). Her research focuses on political institutions, citizenship, electoral processes, and print culture in Argentina, with a particular emphasis on the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Her major works include Between Revolution and the Ballot Box (2000), Jardines secretos, legitimaciones públicas (2010), and Construcciones impresas (2003). She is currently completing a book-length history of Argentina for Cambridge University Press and researching the history of democracy in South America and the Atlantic World (1860–1930).
Research Support: Her work has been supported by the Leverhulme Trust, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and CONICET. She has held fellowships at Harvard, the University of Maryland, Notre Dame, and Madrid’s Institute for Advanced Studies.
Teaching: She teaches courses such as Argentina in Global Context, World History (1500–Present), and Modern Latin America II. She is also an elected US resident fellow of Argentina’s National Academy of History and serves on the editorial board of The Americas.
