Professor Tracey's research examines entrepreneurship, institutional change, regional innovation, and social innovation through the lens of organizational theory. His work investigates how organizations navigate complex institutional environments, particularly focusing on social innovation as social-symbolic work, legitimation strategies in authoritarian contexts, and the role of purpose in for-profit firms. He explores how social problems are constructed and how organizations build legitimacy through symbolic and practical actions.
His recent publications (2021-2025) reveal a strong focus on peacekeeping innovation, climate security, social media activism, and UN Sustainable Development Goal implementation. Recurring themes include meta-organizational innovation in global governance, anti-stigma organizing in digital spaces, and the tension between protective disguise and advocacy in restrictive political environments. His work consistently bridges theoretical rigor with practical implications for social enterprises and global institutions.
Professor Tracey serves as Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review and sits on editorial boards of leading journals including Academy of Management Journal and Strategic Organization. He actively contributes to the Cambridge Corporate Governance Network and holds fellowships at Clayton State University's Center for Social Innovation & Sustainable Entrepreneurship.
As Co-Director of the Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation, he leads interdisciplinary initiatives connecting academic research with practical social enterprise applications.
