Paul Strutton

Dr Paul Strutton is an Associate Professor in Human Neurophysiology within the Department of Surgery & Cancer at Imperial College London’s Faculty of Medicine. He leads the Nick Davey Laboratory and collaborates with the Musculoskeletal Medical Engineering Centre, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Technology Network, and Space Lab. His research focuses on neural control of trunk muscles under normal and pathological conditions, spinal nerve imaging for sciatica diagnosis, and rehabilitation strategies for spinal cord injury (SCI) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and olfactory ensheathing cells (OEC) transplantation.

Research Highlights:

• Demonstrated arm-trunk neural interactions in SCI patients via TMS, funded by INSPIRE foundation
• Developed novel imaging techniques for compressed spinal nerves in sciatica patients (Dunhill Medical Trust)
• Investigated virtual reality and non-invasive brain stimulation for pain modulation (Pain Relief Foundation)

Teaching & Mentorship: He teaches anatomy and neuroscience across undergraduate and postgraduate programs (MBBS, Medical Biosciences BSc) and supervises PhD, BSc, MSc, and MRes students. Former roles include Director of Projects for the BSc in Surgery & Anaesthesia and course leadership in thoracic anatomy and neuroscience modules.

Labs & Networks: Leads the Nick Davey Laboratory within the MSk Lab, collaborates with the Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Technology Network and Space Lab, and works internationally with Polish clinicians on OEC transplantation therapies.
