Paul Rodmell is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Birmingham, UK. His research focuses on British musical culture from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, with special emphasis on opera, church music, and French musical influences in Britain. He holds a BMus and PhD from the University of Birmingham.
Research Interests:
- Operatic culture in Britain (1875–1918)
- Anglican church music and liturgical practices
- French music's impact on British composers (1830–1914)
- Art music in Ireland during the Victorian era
Teaching: Courses include Tonal Harmony, Romantic Music, British Music Studies, and modules on Broadway musicals and orchestration.
Recent Scholarship: Recent works include a monograph on French music's influence in Britain (2020), articles on Victorian operatic reception, and editorial work on period music journals. Current projects explore the Oxford Movement's impact on Birmingham's church music and pre-Victorian opera history.
Advising: Supervises four doctoral students researching topics like Victorian town hall organs, Granville Bantock's works, and British string quartets (1900–1950).
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including contributions to Music and Letters and Nineteenth-Century Music Review.
