Paul Milgrom is the Shirley and Leonard Ely Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and holds courtesy appointments as Professor at both the Department of Management Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Business. He is chairman and co-founder of Auctionomics, which designs and assists bidders in high-stakes auctions.
Professor Milgrom is the world's leading expert in auction theory and market design, with groundbreaking theoretical contributions spanning game theory, organizational economics, and information economics. His work uniquely bridges theoretical foundations and practical applications, particularly in spectrum auction design. He pioneered the simultaneous multiple round auction with activity rules and co-developed the core-selecting package auction. His research demonstrates exceptional breadth, connecting microeconomic theory with real-world market mechanisms across telecommunications, finance, and resource allocation.
Recent publications reveal Milgrom's continued leadership in advancing auction theory toward increasingly complex applications. His work addresses challenging constraints in market mechanisms, spectrum allocation problems, and the intersection of economics with computer science and artificial intelligence. These publications demonstrate a clear evolution from theoretical foundations to sophisticated practical implementations that have generated billions in value through improved market efficiency worldwide.

Professor Milgrom has served as dissertation advisor to many successful economists. His grant-funded research has primarily focused on market design and auction theory, with significant support from government agencies and private organizations. Through Auctionomics, he led the design of the US FCC's incentive auction, which generated $19.5 billion while paying $10.0 billion to TV broadcasters, demonstrating the practical impact of his theoretical work.
As co-founder and chairman of Auctionomics, Milgrom leads a multidisciplinary team of economists, computer scientists, and engineers dedicated to solving complex resource allocation problems. The company has become the premier institution for applying auction theory to real-world challenges, particularly in spectrum allocation, where Milgrom's designs have been implemented globally with extraordinary success.
