Paul R. Milgrom is the Shirley R. and Leonard W. Ely Jr. Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. He holds courtesy professorships in Management Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Business. His research focuses on auction design, market mechanisms, and economic theory, with notable contributions to radio spectrum auctions, internet advertising, and mechanism design. He co-founded Auctionomics, a firm specializing in auction design and consulting.
Education includes a PhD in Business (1979), MS in Statistics (1978), and AB in Mathematics (1970) from Stanford, and an MA (Honors) from Yale (1982). He has been at Stanford since 1987 and previously taught at Northwestern and Yale.
Milgrom’s research interests span auction theory, game theory, and market design. His work on simultaneous multiple round auctions and incentive auctions has revolutionized spectrum allocation globally. Recent projects include designing water rights markets and addressing surface water allocation challenges.
He has received prestigious awards such as the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economics, the Nemmers Prize (2008), and the Carty Award (2018). His advisory roles include directing the Market Design Program at SIEPR and serving as a Senior Fellow there. He has advised numerous successful economists, including Susan Athey and Joshua Gans.
Key contributions include foundational work on reputation in games, supermodularity in industrial organization, and market microstructure. His books, such as Putting Auction Theory to Work, are seminal in their fields. He continues to influence applied economics through innovative market designs and policy recommendations.
