Paul Howe is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of New Brunswick's Faculty of Arts. He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and completed graduate studies at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on democratic disengagement, nationalism, and public opinion, particularly in the Canadian context. He has authored/co-edited influential works including Citizens Adrift (2010), which won the 2011 Donald Smiley Prize, and Judicial Power and Canadian Democracy (2001).
His research addresses declining political participation among youth, electoral behavior, and social capital in New Brunswick. Notable projects include evaluating e-consultation initiatives and studying generational differences in political knowledge. Teaching specialties include Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, Quebec Politics, and Research Methods.
He served as Research Director at the Institute for Research on Public Policy before joining UNB in 2001. His work bridges academic scholarship with practical civic engagement, emphasizing empowerment of younger generations through critical political education.
