Meira Levinson is a Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), co-convener of the Civic and Moral Education Initiative (CMEI), and leads the Justice in Schools project. Her work bridges normative political philosophy, educational practice, and policy, focusing on civic education, multiculturalism, youth empowerment, and educational ethics. She has eight years of classroom experience in Atlanta and Boston public schools, which inform her research.
Levinson’s seminal work No Citizen Left Behind (2012) critiques the civic empowerment gap and won multiple awards, including the Michael Harrington Award and the North American Society for Social Philosophy Book Award. Her Guggenheim-supported project, Justice in Schools, develops tools for educators to address justice in schools through philosophical analysis and case studies. She advocates for cross-fertilization among scholarship, policy, and practice to tackle complex educational dilemmas.
Her research interests include educational equity, ethical dilemmas in teaching, pandemic-era schooling, and the intersection of health equity with educational access. She has published widely on civic education, including Democratic Discord in Schools (2019) and Dilemmas of Educational Ethics (2019), which explore practical and philosophical challenges in educational settings.
