Research Interests
Holmquist explores how architectural design interacts with political ideologies and technological advancements. His work bridges philosophical inquiry—particularly Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Hannah Arendt—with architectural practice. Key topics include the ethical implications of public space design, the legacy of 18th-century theorists like Ledoux, and the role of architecture in shaping social dynamics.
Publications
His recent works analyze architectural theory through interdisciplinary lenses, including contributions to THE PLAN Journal and the forthcoming The Figure of Knowledge, which examines mid-20th-century architectural theory. Earlier publications engage with the philosophical underpinnings of urban design and spatial narratives.
Teaching
Holmquist instructs advanced design studios (ARCH 4001/5002/7005, ARCH 7004) and seminars (ARCH 5004), emphasizing critical theory and design methodologies. Courses like ARCH 2401 introduce foundational concepts in architectural appreciation.
