Dr Paul Hodge is a Senior Lecturer in Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Newcastle’s School of Environmental and Life Sciences. His research focuses on Indigenous-led geographies, humanitarian settlement, and critical development studies. He holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle and has been recognized with awards including the Pro-Vice Chancellor’s teaching commendation and Academic Staff Excellence Award.
Research Interests:
- Indigenous sovereignty and coexistence with Gumbaynggirr Country
- Refugee settlement dynamics in regional Australia
- Decolonizing pedagogies and strengths-based methodologies
Recent Work: Current projects include the ARC-funded 'Juungambala' (2022–2027) exploring Gumbaynggirr Country’s songlines and 'Settling Well' (2022–2027) assessing refugee integration. His work intersects with vegan geographies, environmental ethics, and critical development pedagogy.
Grants & Collaborations: Over $3.5M in ARC and external funding. Collaborates with Gumbaynggirr custodians, NGOs like AMES Australia, and international networks including the Critical Development Study Group.
Teaching: Courses emphasize critical engagement, two-way learning, and community partnerships. Coordinates seminars and ethics policy for the School.
