Paul Fernandes is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with The Lyell Centre and Global Research Institutes. He holds roles in the Scottish Parliament (2022–2027). Previously, he was Chair in Fisheries Science at the University of Aberdeen (2018–2022) and MASTS Reader (2011–2018). His career includes leadership roles at Marine Scotland Science (1994–2011) and international research in Ireland and Bolivia.
His research focuses on sustainable marine resource management, advanced underwater technologies (e.g., acoustics, Smartrawl invention), and global fish distribution studies. Key areas include reducing bycatch, improving fisheries practices, and assessing artificial structures' environmental impacts.
