Michel Kaiser is a Professor of Marine Conservation Ecology at Bangor University (Personal Chair since 2006) and a Bicentennial Research Leader at The Lyell Centre, Heriot-Watt University, since 2019. He serves on UK government advisory bodies such as the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (2012–present) and the Marine Science Coordination Committee (2014–present), and chairs Seafish’s Science Advisory Group (2015–present). His career spans marine research, policy advisory roles, and international collaboration.

His research focuses on sustainable marine resource use, particularly fisheries and aquaculture, with emphasis on ecosystem-based management, seabed-fishing interactions, and policy integration. His work underpinned Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifications for scallop and mussel fisheries, and informed 27 MSC assessments globally. He has led extensive collaborations with governments and the fishing industry in the Isle of Man and Wales.
Kaiser has supervised 22 PhD students to completion (100% success rate) and currently mentors four. He has secured over £8.2 million in grants as principal or co-investigator, including funding from the European Union, UK governments, and research councils.
