Dr. Isobel Bloor is a Research Fellow at Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences, currently based on the Isle of Man where she works as a postdoctoral fisheries scientist. Her research focuses on stock assessment of commercial shellfish species and developing innovative methods for data collection in fisheries management.
Education:
- PhD in The ecology, distribution and spawning behaviour of the commercially important common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) at University of Plymouth (2009-2012)
- MSc in Marine Ecology and Environmental Management at Queen Mary University, London (2006-2007)
- BSc in Biology with North American Studies at University of Sussex (2001-2005)
Dr. Bloor's research primarily centers on fisheries science with emphasis on stock assessment methodologies for commercially important species including scallops, lobsters, and whelks in the Irish Sea. Her work combines field-based approaches with advanced data analysis techniques, including developing presence-only and presence-absence species distribution models. She has extensive experience working directly with inshore fishermen to conduct acoustic and data storage tagging studies, as well as in situ scuba surveys of spawning grounds.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on improving stock assessment techniques for commercially important shellfish species, particularly examining whelk and scallop populations in the Irish Sea. Her research combines traditional fisheries data with innovative technologies like baited remote underwater video systems and gear-in-gear-out sensors to enhance data collection in data-poor fisheries.
Dr. Bloor actively contributes to the scientific community through her participation in the ICES Scallop Assessment Working Group (WGScallop), where she served as Chairman for a 2024 workshop. Her collaborative work spans multiple European institutions and addresses critical challenges in sustainable fisheries management.
She has supervised numerous MSc students on projects related to Isle of Man fisheries, covering topics from disruptive technology trials to habitat mapping and disease prevalence studies. Her research project GWMF focused on stock assessment, ecosystem-based fisheries management, and the impacts of marine renewables on commercial shellfish fisheries (2020-2022).
Based at Thie Slieau Whallian on the Isle of Man, Dr. Bloor works closely with government agencies to provide the scientific foundation necessary for managing scallop, lobster, and crab fisheries within territorial waters, bridging the gap between academic research and practical fisheries management.
