Paul E. Nahme is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Director of Judaic Studies at Brown University. His scholarship bridges modern Jewish thought, cultural history, and critical theory, with a focus on intersections between identity, affect, race, and religion.
- Education: PhD (2013), MA (2008), BA (2006) from the University of Toronto
Research Interests: Nahme examines racial formation through Jewish identity, analyzing how affective economies shape historical and contemporary antisemitism, nationalism, and secularization. His work engages German/French philosophy (Kant, Cohen, Weimar/Nazi periods), kabbalistic and Hasidic traditions, and critical race theory.
Key Publications: His award-finalist book Hermann Cohen and the Crisis of Liberalism (2019) explores Enlightenment liberalism through Jewish philosophical lenses. In Ghost People: Race, Religion and the Affective Sources of Jewish Identity (2024), he investigates racial affect in post-Holocaust and post-slavery contexts. He also co-edited Covenantal Thinking (2024) on David Novak's theology.

Teaching: Courses include "Race, Religion, and the Secular," "Heidegger, the Jews, and the Crisis of Liberalism," and "Fascism: 1933-Present." He also teaches on political theology and the ethics of minority identities.
