Elad Lapidot

Prof. Elad Lapidot is a University Professor at the University of Lille, affiliated with the Faculty of Languages, Culture and Societies and the Department of Roman, Slavic and Oriental Studies. His research focuses on Jewish thought, continental philosophy, hermeneutics, and translation studies, examining intercultural and interepistemic encounters, particularly between contemporary philosophy and Talmudic thought. He holds a law degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and later pursued philosophy, earning his doctorate at the University of Paris 1. His academic career includes roles at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt Universität Berlin, and the University of Bern, where he completed his habilitation. His notable work includes Jews Out of the Question: A Critique of Anti-Anti-Semitism (2020), exploring the paradoxical opposition to Jewish thought within post-Holocaust philosophy.

His teaching spans courses such as the History of Semitic Languages, Ancient and Medieval Jewish Philosophy, and Modern Jewish Thought. He is a member of the ULR 4074 - Center for Studies in Civilizations, Languages, and Foreign Literature. Recent publications include analyses of Levinas’s political theology, critiques of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict’s religious framing, and decolonizing anti-Semitism studies. His work bridges philosophy, religion, and politics, with a focus on Jewish intellectual history and contemporary epistemological debates.

His work interrogates the intersections of law, religion, and statehood, particularly in contexts of exile and diaspora. Notable areas include the critique of antisemitism, the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, and the legacy of thinkers like Franz Rosenzweig and Emmanuel Levinas.

Publications: Over 40 articles and books, including monographs on Heidegger, Gnosticism, and Jewish philosophy. Recent trends emphasize political theology, decolonial theory, and critiques of state religion. His German translation of Anti-Anti-Semitismus (2021) highlights his engagement with continental European philosophy.
