Professor Wei Zhang is a scholar in the Department of Philosophy, specializing in comparative philosophy, continental philosophy, and East Asian studies. Her doctoral training at the University of Minnesota (1995) focused on twentieth-century continental philosophy, East-West comparative thought, and East Asian Studies. Prior to this, she studied classical Chinese language and texts in China. Her research bridges continental philosophy (Heidegger, Gadamer, Foucault) with East Asian traditions, exploring topics like medical cosmology and cross-cultural hermeneutics.
Recent research includes projects on 'Heidegger’s Dasein Psychotherapy' and 'Foucault’s Discourses and Archaeology of Medicine.' She has authored books such as Heidegger, Rorty and Eastern Thinkers and What is Enlightenment, Can China Answer Kant’s Question?, along with numerous articles on comparative philosophy and medical hermeneutics. Her current work includes translating canonical Chinese medical texts for Columbia University Press.
Teaching focuses on courses like 'Buddhist Philosophy,' 'Medicine and Science in Ancient China,' and graduate seminars in comparative philosophy. Her research emphasizes cross-cultural dialogue, phenomenology, and the intersection of philosophy with medicine and religion.
