Paul Corcoran

Paul Corcoran is a Senior Lecturer in Perinatal Epidemiology at University College Cork (UCC), affiliated with the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre and the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Epidemiology & Public Health. He holds a BSc in Statistics and Computer Science, an MSc in Statistics, and a PhD in Epidemiology, all from UCC. His research focuses on perinatal health, suicidal behavior epidemiology, and health information systems. He has authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to international texts on suicide prevention.

Corcoran served as Deputy Director of the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) and was Adjunct Senior Lecturer at UCC. He held a Visiting Professorship at the University of Oviedo (Spain) in 2008/09 and chairs the International Association for Suicide Prevention’s Special Interest Group on National Suicide Certification Systems. His work includes leading studies on self-harm prevention (e.g., SEYLE trial), maternal morbidity, and the impact of economic crises on mental health.

Research grants include projects on maternal health (MAMMI-SIM study), youth mental health, and suicide prevention strategies. He collaborates internationally on initiatives like the European-funded SEYLE and JAMIE programs. Key articles analyze self-harm repetition risks, psychiatric risk factors in adolescents, and obstetric interventions like membrane sweeping. His work bridges clinical practice, public health policy, and epidemiological research.
