Dr Paul Bowie is a Professor at Staffordshire University and holds adjunct roles as Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow’s School of Health and Wellbeing and Adjunct Professor at Queen’s University, Ontario. With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in healthcare safety, human factors, and quality improvement. His current positions include Programme Director (Safety & Improvement) at NHS Education for Scotland and Senior Investigation Science Educator at England’s Health Services Safety Investigations Body.
Academic qualifications include a PhD in Significant Event Analysis from the University of Glasgow, an MSc in Applied Ergonomics from Nottingham University, and a BA in Applied Social Studies. He is a Chartered Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist and leads the Healthcare Sector Group at the UK Chartered Institute of Ergonomics.
Bowie’s research focuses on healthcare safety investigations, safety culture assessment, and integrating human factors into clinical education. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited books on patient safety. His recent work explores pandemic healthcare resilience, maternity safety systems, and human factors in clinical workflows.
Notable achievements include Fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and Royal College of General Practitioners. He advises on ventilator design during the pandemic and collaborates globally on healthcare safety projects. Bowie teaches human factors concepts, patient safety practices, and research methods to medical students and faculty development programs.
He actively contributes to safety improvement through clinical human factors advocacy, leading workshops on risk management and medico-legal case analysis. His work bridges academic research with real-world healthcare system challenges, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and systems thinking.
