Dr Paul Andell is an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Suffolk, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. His research focuses on serious youth violence, child criminal exploitation, gangs, and policy-driven harm reduction strategies. He leads the MA in Criminology, Crime, and Victimisation, teaching modules on theories of crime, gangs, and collaborative partnerships. His work bridges academia and practice through co-produced initiatives like the National Lived Experience Training on Child Criminal Exploitation with the National County Lines Coordination Centre.
Dr Andell’s research interests include youth offending, gang dynamics, community safety, and drugs policy. He has authored influential monographs such as Thinking Seriously About Gangs (2019), edited key handbooks on gangs, and published extensively in journals like Youth and Policy and Safer Communities. His policy-impactful work earned him a British Academy Innovation Fellowship (2022) and the American Society of Criminology’s Prize for Policy Impactful Research (2022).
He actively engages with criminal justice professionals through training programs for probation officers, schools, and law enforcement. His international engagements include membership in Eurogangs, the European Society of Criminology, and advisory roles for governments and NGOs. Dr Andell is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has received commendations for his contributions to reducing violent crime.
