Paul A. Rahe

Paul A. Rahe is Professor of History and Political Science at Hillsdale College, where he holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in the Western Heritage. With a distinguished academic career spanning multiple institutions including Cornell University, Franklin and Marshall College, and the University of Tulsa, Rahe is recognized as a leading scholar in political philosophy and ancient history.

His educational background includes a B.A. in History from Yale University (1971), a B.A. in Literae Humaniores from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar (1974), and a Ph.D. in History from Yale University (1977). His academic journey reflects deep engagement with classical studies and political thought.

Rahe's research focuses on the evolution of self-government in Western civilization, with particular expertise in ancient Greek history (especially Sparta), political philosophy from Machiavelli to Montesquieu, and the American founding era.
