Genevieve Rousseliere is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University and advanced degrees from the École Normale Supérieure and the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary political philosophy, republicanism, democratic theory, and the intersection of inequality and freedom. She examines how individuals achieve freedom amid economic, social, racial, and gender-based inequalities, with a particular emphasis on French political thought from the Enlightenment to the 19th century.
Her notable works include Sharing Freedom: Republicanism and Exclusion in Revolutionary France (2024), analyzing French republicanism’s struggles with inclusivity, and a forthcoming book on Rousseau’s political economy. She has published in top journals like the European Journal of Political Theory and American Journal of Political Science.
Rousseliere teaches courses on political theory, feminist philosophy, and inequality in Western thought. She previously held positions at the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research has been funded by grants such as the FACE Foundation’s “Challenges to Mass Democracy” (2017–2019).
