Patrick Walsh is an Instructor of German in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of South Carolina, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in 18th- and 19th-century German literature and philosophy, focusing on drama’s role in addressing philosophical, religious, and political questions.
His research includes a dissertation titled “Words Full of Deed: Prophets and Prophecy in German Literature around 1800”, analyzing prophetic figures in literary texts, and a current project exploring the relationship between opera and dramatic performance in 19th-century German-language culture. He teaches German language courses (elementary to intermediate), rapid reading/translation, and literature and culture, with past courses on religion-literature dynamics and animals in German literary traditions.
Dr. Walsh earned his BA in English from Davidson College (2006) and MA, MPhil, and PhD in Germanic Languages from Columbia University (2009, 2011, 2017). Prior to joining UofSC in 2018, he taught at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, as a Graduate Teaching Fellow.
