Dr. Patricia Maddox is an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas. She specializes in sexuality and gender studies, youth culture, race and ethnicity, and intersectional social theory. Her research focuses on first-generation college student experiences, LGBTQIA+ education, and academic belonging. She teaches courses like Race and Ethnicity and Sex in Society, integrating community engagement into her pedagogy.
Education: PhD in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago, Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies (Loyola), BA in Sociology from Stetson University.
Research & Engagement: Dr. Maddox coordinates the Helping Professions Living Learning Community and facilitates the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program. She co-founded a groundbreaking community partnership with Dougherty Family College, earning regional acclaim for linking sociology students with vulnerable populations via volunteer work at Catholic Charities' Family Service Center. This initiative blends academic learning with service, addressing housing discrimination and family homelessness.
Awards: Recognized for advising excellence (2021) and civic leadership (2020). Her work emphasizes bridging university-community gaps through collaborative, intersectional approaches.
