Patricia Cioe is an Associate Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University's School of Public Health, affiliated with the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (CAAS). Her research focuses on cardiovascular risk reduction in people with HIV, particularly smoking cessation and harm reduction strategies. She holds a PhD in Nursing Research from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed postdoctoral training at Brown's CAAS.
Dr. Cioe has developed innovative behavioral interventions targeting smoking cessation and heart-healthy behaviors in HIV-positive populations. Her NIH-funded studies include investigations into electronic nicotine delivery systems for harm reduction and the effects of smoking on HIV clinical outcomes like biomarkers of inflammation. Notable awards include the 2018 Nurse Researcher Recognition Award and 2019 Rhode Island Nurse Scientist of the Year.
Her work combines qualitative research methods with clinical trial design, emphasizing translational research to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations. Current projects explore the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions and mobile health (mHealth) apps like Sense2Quit for smoking cessation support.
Collaborations include Christopher Kahler and Jennifer Tidey in addiction studies, with grant support from NIH initiatives targeting tobacco use in HIV-positive individuals. Dr. Cioe also maintains clinical credentials as a nurse practitioner and has contributed to hepatitis C treatment protocols in methadone maintenance patients.
