Pascal NOBLE

Pascal NOBLE is a University Professor at the Toulouse Institute of Mathematics, part of the University of Toulouse. He works within the Mathematics for Industry and Physics team, contributing to both teaching and research activities in numerical analysis and mathematical physics.

His research focuses on free surface hydrodynamic instabilities, particularly roll-waves, and mathematical modeling of shallow water flows. Key research areas include:

• Spectral and nonlinear stability analysis of periodic wave trains solutions of the Saint Venant equations
• Mathematical justification of shallow water models for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
• Numerical schemes for thin film flows with surface tension
• Applications to shallow flows on various topographies, including non-Newtonian fluids (Bingham fluids, power law) and two-fluid flows
• Dynamical systems applied to physics, including localized oscillations in nonlinear oscillator chains

Professor NOBLE has led significant research projects including the ANR JCJC Shallow Water Equations for Complex Fluids (2009-2013) and participated in the ANR blanc Bond project (2003-2017). He is also a member of the GdR Équations aux dérivées partielles and the GdR Ruissellements et Films Cisaillés.

His publication record shows consistent output with numerous collaborations, particularly with researchers from Indiana University and ICJ Lyon. His research has practical applications ranging from understanding water drops to modeling tsunamis, as highlighted in his article for Images of Mathematics titled 'From water drops to tsunamis: 'thin' liquid films everywhere.'

Professor NOBLE teaches Numerical Analysis for second-year IC students and Mathematics for first-year students at INSA Toulouse, covering fundamental mathematical concepts and numerical methods.
