Dr. Yue Liu is a Professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he has been serving since 1997, advancing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor (2003-2009) and finally to his current position as Professor (since 2010). Prior to joining UTA, he served as an R. H. Bing Instructor at the University of Texas at Austin (1994-1997).
His educational background includes an MA from Zhejiang University and a PhD from Brown University (1994), both in Mathematics.
Dr. Liu's research focuses on Partial Differential Equations, Applied Analysis, and Fluid Mechanics, with specialization in stability theory of nonlinear wave equations, formation of singularities, water waves, modeling and analysis of simplified phenomenological models, and integrable systems. His work bridges theoretical mathematics with practical applications in fluid dynamics, particularly in shallow-water wave phenomena.
Analysis of his recent publications (2020-2024) reveals a consistent focus on the stability properties of solitary waves and solitons in various nonlinear wave equations. His research particularly examines the Camassa-Holm equation, Degasperis-Procesi equation, and shallow-water models with cubic nonlinearity. A significant portion of his work investigates orbital stability, transverse stability, and the mathematical properties of solutions to these equations, often with applications to geophysical fluid dynamics and water wave modeling.
His scientific recognition includes the UT-Arlington Research Excellence Award (2010).

Dr. Liu has advised numerous PhD students including Rezwana K Roza, Emran Hossen, Ivan Toledo, and Christina Martinez, among others. He has also mentored postdoctoral researchers such as Huafei Di, Xingyu Tu, and Guilong Gui. His research has been supported by substantial funding from multiple sources including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Simons Foundation, and the Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program (NHARP), with projects totaling over $600,000 focused on shallow-water waves, solitary waves, and related mathematical phenomena.
His research group at UTA maintains active collaboration with mathematicians worldwide, as evidenced by his extensive publication record and numerous presentations at international conferences. The group's work continues to advance the theoretical understanding of nonlinear wave phenomena with applications to fluid mechanics and geophysical flows.
