Pascal MONTLAHUC is a Maître de conférences HDR (Associate Professor) in Ancient History at the University of Paris Cité. He previously served as a Scientific Member of the French School of Rome (2016–2019) and held teaching/research positions at Paris Diderot University (2012–2016), including a visiting scholarship at UC Santa Barbara. His educational background includes a Bachelor's in History/Geography from the University of Savoie (2009), a Master's in Archaeology and Ancient History from ENS Lyon (2011), and the Agrégation/CAPES teaching certifications (2012).
His research explores the intersection of politics, culture, and society in the Roman world. Primary themes include:
- Charisma and political leadership in Republican/Imperial Rome
- Role of humor, emotions, and public opinion in power dynamics
- Historical sociology of ancient institutions
- Reception of antiquity in modern historiography (e.g., Weber, Veyne)
Recent publications (2020–2025) focus on reinterpreting Roman political culture through theories of charisma, gender, and discourse. Articles frequently analyze imperial performativity, civic identity, and methodological innovations in ancient studies. A consistent emphasis on cross-disciplinary approaches bridges history, sociology, and anthropology.
He co-directs research programs including 'Representing the City (Greece, Rome)' and contributes to archaeological projects in Italy (Villa San Silvestro, Sanctuary of Diana). His public scholarship includes articles in L'Histoire and editorial work for academic volumes on Roman political theory.
