Jean-Pierre Guilhembet is Professor of ancient history at Université Paris Cité (formerly Paris Diderot) since 2012. A former member of the French School of Rome (1993-1996) and holder of the Habilitation à diriger des recherches from ENS de Lyon (2011), he has successively taught at the Universities of Provence, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Orléans and ENS de Lyon before joining Paris 7/Paris Cité.
His research unites ancient urban history, historical topography, domestic architecture, toponymy and the socio-economic history of the Roman world. He has published extensively on the Roman housing market, the density and distribution of domus and insulae inside the Augustan regions, senatorial residential strategies from the late Republic to the Antonines, and the symbolic uses of civic space in political discourse. Co-director of a dozen collective volumes and author of more than sixty articles and book chapters, he is currently preparing studies on Roman domonymy and the housing crisis of the 40s BCE.
Guilhembet’s work is characterised by the integration of literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the lived experience of the ancient city. Recurrent themes include the transition from private house to public urban space, the role of writing in identifying property owners, and the representation of Rome in authors such as Plutarch. His publications appear in leading journals (MEFRA, Pallas, Histoire urbaine, Cahiers du Centre Gustave Glotz) and in major collaborative series (Collection de l’École française de Rome, Scripta Antiqua, PUR).
