Claudia Moser is an Associate Professor and Graduate Advisor in the Department of Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), within the College of Letters and Science. Her research focuses on Roman religion's material culture, particularly sacrificial rituals and altars, integrating insights from archaeology, art history, classics, anthropology, and cognitive science.
Education: Ph.D. from Brown University's Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World (2014), B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Research Interests: Roman Republican sanctuaries, altars, ancient rituals, burial practices, and the intersection of economy and religion. She has conducted fieldwork in Rome, Latium, Greece, and Petra.
Scientific Awards: Recipient of the Rome Prize (American Academy in Rome, 2013–2014), Memoria Romana Dissertation Fellowship (2012–2013), and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Puget Sound (2014–2015).
Current Projects: Investigating sacrificial practices in pre-Roman and Roman Gaul, the economy-religion nexus in early Central Italy, and the apotropaic phallus symbol in Roman North Africa, Britain, and Italy.
