Micaela Canopoli is a Research Fellow in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick, where she conducts research on the sacred landscape of Attica under Roman rule. Previously, she served as an assistant ("cultrice della materia") at the Department of Classics at Sapienza University of Rome and was a member of the Basilica Julia Project (a collaboration between Sapienza University of Rome and CNR Ibam).
She holds a BA/MA in Archaeological and Historical Sciences of Classical World and the East and a PhD in Classical Archaeology, both from Sapienza University of Rome. Her doctoral research focused on the cult of Artemis in Attica, with field experience from excavations in Sardinia, Tunisia, Puglia, and Rome.
Dr. Canopoli specializes in Classical Archaeology with particular focus on the archaeology of ritual, ancient religion, and ritual practice in ancient Attica between the archaic period and Roman times. Her research explores sacred landscapes as cultural constructions, examining archaeological and historical data from Attica's sanctuaries to understand religious evolution. She investigates the relationship between cult practices and communities, with special attention to how Roman rule transformed Greek religious landscapes.
Her publications demonstrate consistent expertise in Artemis cults, votive offerings, and religious material culture. Recent work examines syncretism between Babylonian and Greek deities, toponymic cult epithets, and the musical dimensions of ancient rituals. Her research bridges archaeological evidence with textual analysis to reconstruct ancient religious practices.
- British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship (current research position)
Dr. Canopoli has presented her research at major international conferences including the AIA Annual Meeting and Rac/Trac conferences. Her work has been supported by grants including a research period at the University of Oxford funded by Sapienza University of Rome. She has collaborated with scholars across Europe on projects examining ancient religious practices and material culture.
As a member of the Basilica Julia Project and current Warwick researcher, she contributes to collaborative archaeological investigations focusing on Roman and Greek religious sites, particularly examining how sanctuaries functioned within their broader cultural and political contexts.
