Dr. Brian Martens is a Lecturer in Archaeology & Ancient History at the School of Classics, University of St Andrews. He holds a DPhil (2018) and MPhil (2012) in Classical Archaeology from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Greek and Roman archaeology, particularly the monuments and topography of Athens and Attica, with an emphasis on ancient art’s social, religious, and economic dimensions.

Research Interests: Greek and Roman sculpture, artistic production, and the integration of marble sculpture within ancient societies. Active in fieldwork at the Athenian Agora since 2008, he supervises excavations behind the Stoa Poikile. His work has been supported by institutions including the Archaeological Institute of America and the Onassis Foundation.

- Chester Dale Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (2018)
Teaching: Offers modules such as ‘Sanctuaries and the Sacred in the Greek World’ and ‘The Colours of Ancient Art’, focusing on Mediterranean archaeology and art from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity.
Advising: Supervises PhD student Isabella Green. Engaged in collaborative projects with institutions like the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (Senior Associate Member).
