Pascal Delhom

Pascal Delhom is a Professor at the Philosophical Seminar of the European University of Flensburg, where he has been working since October 2004. He completed his habilitation in 2023 and serves as an academic advisor at the Department of Philosophy since March 2010. His institutional roles include membership in the Central Budget and Planning Committee (since 2012), the Senate (2016-2022; since 2024), and serving as Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer (since 2017).

Delhom studied French literature and philosophy in Geneva, came to Germany in 1989 with a scholarship, and completed his doctorate at the University of Bochum on Emmanuel Levinas. His academic journey includes teaching French and working as a news translator at Deutsche Welle during his doctorate, teaching philosophy at the University of Lüneburg, and a year at Vechta working on peace research.

His research centers on practical and political philosophy, with particular focus on the Philosophy of Peace from Historical and Systematic Perspectives, Philosophy of Social and Interpersonal Relationships, and the Phenomenology of Injury or Violence from the Perspective of Suffering. As a leading scholar of Emmanuel Levinas, Delhom has made significant contributions to understanding Levinas's work on responsibility, justice, and ethics.

His scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with peace philosophy, Levinas studies, and phenomenology of violence across multiple publications. Delhom's work demonstrates a clear trajectory from theoretical explorations of Levinas's philosophy toward practical applications in peace studies and conflict resolution, with increasing focus on the relationship between responsibility, trust, and social cohesion.

Delhom holds significant editorial positions including membership on the Editorial Board of Levinas Studies, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Peace Institute Freiburg, and editorial boards of Genealogy + Critique and Kairos journals. His professional affiliations include the German Society for French-speaking Philosophy, German Society for Phenomenological Research, Association for Peace and Conflict Research, and International Network of Philosophers of Education.

His current research projects include a book on the Critique of Suffered Violence, a comprehensive Philosophy of Peace tracing historical developments from antiquity to globalization, and collaborative work on Responsibility and Trust as complementary forms of social peacemaking. His teaching for Spring Semester 2025 covers Education in Social Transformation, History of Philosophy, European Philosophy in School, and Philosophy of Science with Hermeneutics.
