Jan Bierhanzl serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Charles University's Faculty of Humanities, Prague, a position held since 2012. Concurrently, he lectures in the international "Master mundus philosophie" programme (delivering courses in French) and conducts research at the Institute of Philosophy, Academy of Sciences, Prague since 2010.
His academic foundation includes a PhD (2009-2012) earned through a co-tutelle arrangement between Charles University and Université de Bourgogne, Dijon, with a dissertation titled "L’itinéraire de la signifiance éthique chez le dernier Levinas," alongside an MA in philosophy and philology from Charles University (2002-2008).
Dr. Bierhanzl's scholarship centers on Contemporary French Philosophy, with deep engagement in Emmanuel Levinas's ethical framework. His work critically examines intersections of ethics and political philosophy through themes of meaning, nonsense, corporeality, and justice, while extending into aesthetic theory. Key contributions explore Levinas's relationship with thinkers like Foucault, particularly regarding madness, exclusion, and utopian thought.
Analysis of his publications reveals sustained focus on Levinas's "Autrement qu'être," demonstrating methodological rigor in phenomenological analysis. His research consistently bridges abstract ethical concepts with concrete social-political implications, highlighting tensions between individual responsibility and collective justice.
Recognition for his scholarly impact includes:
- 2015: The Otto Wichterle award for outstanding young researchers
Dr. Bierhanzl also co-directs the "Emancipace a kritika" publication series (since 2016). No public records indicate doctoral student supervision, major grant leadership, or dedicated research laboratories under his direction.
