Paolo Verme is a Full Professor of Economic Statistics at the University of Bologna's Department of Statistical Sciences "Paolo Fortunati". Previously, he served as a Senior Economist and Lead Economist at the World Bank (2010–2024), focusing on the Middle East and North Africa region, directing the Global Research Program on Forced Migration in collaboration with UNHCR. He has held adjunct and visiting roles at Bocconi University and the University of Turin (2003–2010).
- Education: B.A. (Economics, University of Torino, 1990), M.Phil. (University of Sussex, 1994), Ph.D. (London School of Economics, 2000).
- Research Expertise: Poverty, inequality, deprivation, forced displacement, social protection, and health using micro-econometric and machine learning methods.
His career includes advising governments, the EU, and UN on social protection reforms, and managing over $16M in research funds through the World Bank-UNHCR partnership. He co-founded the World Bank-UNHCR Joint Data Centre (JDC).
