Paolo Biagio Cipolla is an Associate Professor of Greek Language and Literature at the Department of Human Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, University of Catania. He has been a faculty member since 2015, having previously served as a Researcher (2009–2015) and held research grants. He earned his PhD in Greek and Latin Philology from the University of Catania in 2001 and completed a specialized course in Greek Paleography and Codicology at the Vatican School with honors. He is actively engaged in teaching, research, editorial leadership, and academic service.
His primary research interests lie in Greek theatre, particularly satyr drama, fragmentary tragedies, the works of Aeschylus, Stesichorus, Menander, and Athenaeus of Naucratis. He also investigates the textual transmission of dramatic works, Hellenistic poetry, and ancient scholarship. His methodological expertise includes paleography, codicology, lexicography, and philological commentary.
His recent scholarly output centers on reconstructing lost or fragmentary works, analyzing marginalia in ancient manuscripts, and reinterpreting mythological themes in drama. He has contributed significantly to the national edition of Aeschylus' works and leads research on satyr plays. His publications and conference presentations reflect a sustained engagement with textual criticism, dramatic genre, and the cultural contexts of ancient performance.

Cipolla supervises MA and PhD theses in classical philology and has advised students on topics ranging from Apollonius Rhodius to ancient music. He is Director of the journal Sileno (since 2025, co-director from 2024), and serves on the scientific committees of Rivista di Cultura Classica e Medioevale, La rivista di Engramma, and Classica Vox. He is also President of the Catania delegation of the Italian Association for Classical Culture and a member of the Departmental Parity Committee (2020–2028). He has participated in major national research programs (PRIN) and coordinated university-level research projects on Attic drama and emotional representations in late antiquity.
He has organized academic events, including the 2016 conference in honor of Giuseppina Basta Donzelli, and regularly presents at national and international conferences. He has also contributed to public outreach through seminars on ancient libraries, sacred music, and the enduring relevance of Greek language and myth.
