Padideh Ala'i is a Professor of Law at American University's Washington College of Law (WCL), serving as Director of International and Comparative Legal Studies and Faculty Director of the International Legal Studies Program (ILSP). She leads the interdisciplinary Trade, Investment and Development Program (TID) and directs the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program, a Fulbright initiative. Her expertise spans international economic law, WTO law, comparative legal traditions, and anti-corruption governance.
- Education: B.A., University of Oregon (1985); J.D., Harvard Law School (1988).
Her research focuses on WTO transparency obligations, the evolution of free trade, and the intersection of trade with intellectual property, environment, and human rights. She actively participates in international legal organizations, including the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL Executive Committee) and the International Academy of Comparative Law. Previously, she practiced corporate and international law, representing governments in arbitration and litigation, including the Philippines vs. Westinghouse case.
Ala'i chairs the Wenger Family Lecture Series on International Trade Law and has held leadership roles in ASIL's IELG and AALS's Comparative Law Section. Her work emphasizes global legal frameworks and professional development for mid-career legal professionals.
