Freya Baetens is a full-time Professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford and holds a concurrent affiliation with the Europa Institute at Leiden University. Previously, she was a Professor II at the Department of Private Law, Faculty of Law, University of Oslo, and a key researcher at the PluriCourts Centre of Excellence, where she studied the legitimacy of international courts.
Her research spans international investment law, trade law, arbitration, state responsibility, and cross-fertilization in international law. She has contributed to debates on WTO rules in investment tribunals, adjudicator impartiality, and forum shopping in international disputes.
Her scientific awards include a 2010 SIEL Executive Council membership, a 2010 CISDL Fellowship, and 2014 appointment as ILA Rapporteur. She serves on editorial boards for the Leiden Journal of International Law and Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law.
Her doctoral work at Cambridge and earlier degrees (Cand.Jur./Lic.Jur. magna cum laude from Ghent, LL.M. with honours from Columbia) laid the groundwork for her scholarship in international legal frameworks and sustainable development.
