PIERRE LANE

Pierre Lane is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU), affiliated with the Faculty of Applied Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Dalhousie University (1999), an M.A.Sc. from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (1996), and a B.Eng.Mgt. in Engineering Physics from McMaster University (1993). He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).

His research focuses on biomedical instrumentation and imaging technologies, particularly in cancer detection and diagnosis. Key areas include optical coherence tomography (OCT), autofluorescence imaging, and fiber-optic catheter systems. He develops tools for pulmonary and oral applications, emphasizing multimodal imaging and clinical translation. Recent work involves integrating Doppler OCT with autofluorescence to analyze vascular structures in lung nodules and tracking bronchial thermoplasty outcomes for asthma treatment.

Pierre’s publications between 2014-2015 reflect a strong emphasis on advancing OCT technology for clinical applications, with contributions to validation methods, system miniaturization, and multimodal imaging integration. His work bridges engineering innovation and medical diagnostics, addressing unmet needs in early cancer detection and chronic disease monitoring.

He currently teaches no courses but actively contributes to research through collaborations with institutions like the BC Cancer Research Centre. His lab focuses on translating optical technologies into clinical practice, with ongoing projects in pulmonary and oncological imaging.
