Pedro Jose Miranda da Costa is an Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra's Department of Earth Sciences and holds concurrent roles as Invited Associate Professor at Rio de Janeiro State University. He holds a PhD in Economic and Environmental Geology from the University of Lisbon (2012), an MSc in Geography and Earth Sciences from Brunel University (2006), and a BSc in Geology from the University of Coimbra (2002). His research focuses on tsunami deposits, sedimentology, and coastal hazards, with emphasis on extreme marine inundation events and their geological records.
He has held postdoctoral and visiting researcher positions at institutions including RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and the University of Dundee (UK). His work integrates field studies, sediment analysis, and numerical modeling to understand tsunami and storm impacts. He leads projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and international agencies, exploring topics like Holocene tsunami recurrence and offshore tsunami sediment records.
Key contributions include seminal studies on the 1755 Lisbon tsunami's sedimentary signatures and the development of microtextural and heavy mineral analysis techniques for distinguishing tsunami and storm deposits. Awards include the Arthur Holmes Travel Grant (2015) and top citations in Sedimentary Geology (2013). His teaching spans coastal hazards, geology, and natural catastrophes.
