P. Carl is a Senior Distinguished Artist in Residence in the Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College in Boston. He is the author of the memoir Becoming a Man: The Story of a Transition (Simon & Schuster, 2020) and is currently developing its stage adaptation commissioned by American Repertory Theater.
His education includes a Bachelor's in English Literature and Master's in Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame, and a PhD in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society from the University of Minnesota.
Carl's work centers on Performing Arts with emphasis on theater innovation, dramaturgy, and narrative transformation. His publications in New York Times Magazine, Boston Globe Magazine, and Lit Hub explore identity and performance, while collaborations with Claudia Rankine and Jessica Blank demonstrate interdisciplinary artistry. As founder of the theater journal Howlround, he bridges academic and public discourse.
His major recognitions include:

Carl serves as advisor to the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill and leads creative teams through residencies and dramaturgical partnerships. His ongoing projects integrate scholarly research with theatrical production, supported by prestigious fellowships that fund artistic development.
