Carl Djerassi (1923–2015) was a Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and a pioneer in steroid synthesis. He synthesized norethindrone, the basis for the first oral contraceptive pill, earning him the title “Father of the Pill.” He also contributed to analytical tools like mass spectrometry and magnetic circular dichroism. Djerassi’s career expanded into literature and the arts, founding the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in 1979 to support artists. He held numerous honors, including the National Medal of Science and Wolf Prize in Chemistry.

Research Interests: Steroid synthesis, contraceptive development, marine natural products biosynthesis, and integrating science with literature/playwriting. His later works included novels and plays exploring scientific ethics and societal impacts.
