Dr Ozlem Arikan serves as Lecturer in Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Sheffield Management School, where she has been Level 2 Undergraduate Programme Director since February 2023. Previously, she directed Aston University's MSc Accounting and Finance programme (2019-2022) and maintains active roles in European experimental accounting research.
Education:
- PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
- Senior Fellow, Higher Education Academy
Her research centers on stakeholder judgment and decision-making in corporate reporting contexts, with three core pillars: Environmental and Social Responsibility (exploring alternatives to profit-centric performance metrics), Accountability systems (analyzing unintended consequences of accounting controls), and strategic language use in corporate communications. As one of Europe's few experimental methodology specialists in corporate reporting, she serves on the Accounting and Business Research editorial board.
Recent publications reveal strong thematic continuity across sustainability reporting, experimental accounting, and behavioral finance. Her work consistently examines how linguistic framing, reporting standards, and accountability structures influence stakeholder interpretations - from boilerplate language effects on investors to benefit corporation certification impacts. A distinctive thread connects educational settings with corporate accountability mechanisms.
Scientific Awards:
- Nominated for University of Sheffield’s Education Award (2024) in Doctoral Supervision, Leadership, and Teaching Practice
- Teaching Award from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Teaching Award from University of Warwick
- Teaching Award from Aston University
Dr Arikan actively supervises PhD candidates in sustainability accounting and experimental decision-making research. Her grant portfolio includes Danish Free Research Foundation funding (as collaborator on linear economy project), Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures leadership (investigating emerging economies' IFRS struggles), and Management Control Association principal investigator role (studying IFRS Foundation governance).
She contributes to the Centre for Research on Accounting and Finance in Context (CRAFiC) while developing playful learning methodologies for accounting education, evidenced by her 2021 Edward Elgar book chapter.
