His research is widely published in top-tier journals and supported by major grants from ESRC, ISRF, and Luminate.
His research interests include the financialization of the firm, critical accounting, social network analysis in finance, and the temporal and spatial dimensions of financial reporting. He employs innovative 'follow-the-money' methodologies to trace the social and institutional effects of accounting regimes. His work critically examines how financial logic reshapes corporations, urban development, and environmental policy.
Leaver’s recent publications reveal a strong trend toward analyzing the financialization of real estate, audit failure, and urban regeneration, particularly in Manchester. His interdisciplinary approach integrates economic sociology, political economy, and critical geography. His work increasingly focuses on green finance, audit reform, and the reimagining of financial reporting to support sustainability.
He has received notable recognition, including being an ISRF Political Economy Research Fellow (2017–18). His scientific contributions are further evidenced by grants such as the ESRC-funded 'Inside And Outside The Centripetal City' and the Luminate grant on audit reform.
Adam Leaver actively supervises PhD students in critical accounting and financialization, including Abiodun Akintebi, Sajid Bashir, Kevin Burrows, and previously Avik Mukherjee. He has secured multiple research grants and leads collaborative projects with institutions like Copenhagen Business School. His teaching is research-led, using real-world case studies to explore economic issues with a focus on social responsibility.
He is affiliated with the Centre for Research into Accounting and Finance in Context (CRAFIC), which fosters interdisciplinary research on the societal implications of accounting and finance. The group works on audit accountability, financial engineering, and the foundational economy, aiming to repurpose corporate structures for greater resilience and equity.
