Owen Doody is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery within the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Limerick. With over two decades of academic and clinical experience, his work spans intellectual disability nursing, community integration, and healthcare policy development. His research directly informs national initiatives including Intellectual Disability Nursing Metrics and Older Person Nursing Metrics.
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Ulster (2013), BSc (2001), and Certificate from Waterford Institute of Technology (1998). Prior to academia, he held progressive clinical roles at Daughters of Charity including Clinical Nurse Manager and Staff Nurse.
Doody's research portfolio demonstrates sustained focus on intellectual disability through over 280 publications. Recent work (2023-2025) shows a pronounced emphasis on scoping/integrative reviews addressing systemic healthcare challenges, with particular attention to end-of-life decision-making, educational inclusion, and advanced nursing practice. His publications consistently bridge clinical practice and policy development.

He actively supervises graduate students while contributing to national healthcare projects. Current work focuses on digital advance care planning resources and expanding clinical placement capacity in midwifery education.
