Prof. Dr. Onur Suzan Nobrega is a Professor of Migration, Transculturality and Internationalization at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, where she has been teaching since the winter semester 2023/24. Her academic appointments include courses such as 'Theories and Concepts of International Social Work' and 'Intersektionale, dekoloniale und queer-feministische Perspektiven auf die Soziale Arbeit'. Prior to this position, she served as a scientific researcher at Goethe University Frankfurt (2016-2023) and held lecturing positions at Izmir University of Economics and Goldsmiths, University of London.
Her educational background comprises a PhD in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London (2016), an MA in Media and Communications from the same institution (2007), and undergraduate studies in Sociology, Political Science, and Communication at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf.
Nobrega's research explores critical intersections across multiple disciplines:
- Critical racism and migration studies
- Decolonial, anti-racist and intersectional-feminist theories
- Postmigrant theatre and cultural diversity in arts
- Colonialism, anti-Black racism, and Islam
- Qualitative methodologies including ethnography and discourse analysis
Her scholarly publications demonstrate a consistent focus on racial justice, migration, and cultural production, with recent works (2021) concentrating on right-wing terrorism in Germany and Turkish-German migration history. Earlier research (2010-2018) examined artistic labor, urban gentrification, and institutional racism in cultural and educational settings.
She has received the prestigious Bucerius Ph.D. Scholarship in Migration Studies from ZEIT-Stiftung. Beyond academia, Nobrega maintains active curation and moderation roles in cultural projects addressing anti-racism and memory politics, such as 'Kein Schlussstrich!' and events at Nationaltheater Mannheim.
Nobrega serves on boards of professional associations including FG DeKolonial and Migrant Dramaturgies Network, while contributing to juries for cultural funding programs. Her extensive fieldwork includes research coordination at Berlin's Archiv der Jugendkulturel and qualitative studies on urban segregation.
