Onno Oerlemans is the Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of Literature at Hamilton College, appointed since 1999. He holds joint affiliations with the Department of English and Creative Writing and the Environmental Studies program. Research focuses on Romantic-era literature through ecocritical and animal studies lenses, emphasizing how poetry mediates human-nature relationships. His monograph Poetry and Animals (2018) examines nonhuman representation across literary history, while ongoing work documents Adirondack cultural narratives. Central interests include:
- The ethics of anthropomorphism in literature
- Romanticism's materialist engagement with nature
- Environmental pedagogy and interdisciplinary methodologies
- Historical intersections of colonialism and ecology
