May Mergenthaler is an Associate Professor at The Ohio State University's Department of Germanic Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on German literature from the 17th century to the present, emphasizing poetry, literary criticism, Environmental Humanities, and Gender Studies. She currently writes a book analyzing light in German poetry as a bridge between secular and natural worlds, supported by prestigious awards. Her earlier work includes Zwischen Eros und Mitteilung (2012), exploring Early Romanticism's collaborative writing practices. She co-edits volumes on literary criticism and public sphere dynamics, including a 2015 Oxford Lang publication and a 2024 special issue on manuscripts.
Mergenthaler holds a BA from Hamburg University, MA from Johns Hopkins, and PhD from Princeton. She is affiliated with the Sustainability Institute and Umwelt Center for Germanic Studies and Environmental Humanities. Her teaching spans German literature and culture courses, including 'German Nature Writing' and 'Nature in Germanic and Scandinavian Literatures.' She advises dissertations on 18th-century literature and guides BA theses on topics like Nietzsche-Klimt intersections and peasant literature translations.
Her upcoming projects include a history of poetry criticism and a biography of the Magnus family, tracing their cultural and political trajectories through 19th–20th century Europe. Awards include the Humboldt Fellowship and Ohio State’s Virginia Hull Award.
